What I Am Like

He asked me, “So, what are you like?”

I smiled. And took a long breath.

“I am the girl you might like at first sight. But slowly, I will drive you crazy. Then you will drift away. As you stay away from me, you will miss me and come back to me. That is when you will realize that I have become more or less a habit to you. That is what I am like.”

“So… what are you like?” he asked again, not having got any answer the first time. Apparently, the voice in my head wasn’t loud enough for his ears.

“What’s the fun in reading a book if you already know the whole story?” I questioned his question.

This time, he smiled.

    As with many readers, the “What’s the fun…” line rose to electrify the entire work, making everything shimmer.

    Great metaphor! Let’s allow it to elaborate.

    He’s sufficiently intrigued – just watch him turn those pages! Truth is, she’s writing as they go, meaning she’s not entirely sure herself of everything he’ll read within.

    Isn’t that the way the best relationships bloom, though? Yes, one must read the book, but we help each other write it. Just as she will recognize many of her own passages among his volumes.

      Everyone features in some other’s stories, in some way or the other. When it is a loved one, one gets lucky to be the much-awaited hero or heroine. 🙂

  14. Really great short story. I love how you put it. Very insightful too. But I do have to say that there are some books (and movies) that are so well done that I have to read them again several times. Still, nothing quite compares to the first time.

      Exactly! You want to “yourself” go through the process of getting to know the story, the first time as well as many more times in case you love it. But you wouldn’t want anyone ruining it for you. 🙃
