A hundred horses hurrying
Straight in your direction
Surely are expected
To make you feel like fleeing.
But is that who you are?
A hundred soldiers screaming
For your downfall
Surely are expected
To make you want to shut up.
But is that who you are?
A hundred swords aiming
For your head
Surely are expected
To make you bow down low.
But is that who you are?
It’s dark.
It’s grim.
It’s nothing but discouraging.
It’s nothing like you dreamt.
So would you run away?
Horses or problems,
Soldiers or opponents,
Swords or plots,
Reel or real,
Do you just give up?
You don’t.
For that’s not who you are.
That’s not what you are made of.
That’s not what they trained you for.
You don’t run away.
You stay.
You stand your ground.
You take out your sword of belief.
And you fight them all.
For it ain’t over till it’s over.
Very powerful and thought provoking…!

Thanks much for this poem, Mia, and for reminding us valor, courage and resolution are crucial on all of life’s battlefields.
Though I’m sure I’d be terrified on a “real” battlefield, it’s far from the only contest that calls for our determined efforts.
Indeed, and fortunately, the vast majority of us never will have to withstand a charging foe, yet nearly every day life calls on us to muster the courage and tenacity necessary to withstand all manner of other challenges.
I know, vets would remind me the dangers aren’t the same off the battlefield. In many ways, not even close. Yes, that’s true, of course. Yet, the two aren’t unrelated, either.
Happily, battle never will test most of us, yet situations arise every day that require us to draw on the same staunchness and courage. Whether or not we’d stand firm in battle is a matter of mere speculation for nearly all of us, yet there are other ways a-plenty we can determine if we have the quality.

The pleasure is all mine, Keith! 🙂
Thanks a ton for your wonderful input on the topic.
Yes, it is the everyday battles we face, big or small, that matter the most. Even a soldier is not left bereft of these. All we can do is try our very best to emerge victorious. That is all that really counts. 🙂

An amazing work, Mia. I especially love the last two stanzas where you summed it all up perfectly. Going to save this one for a long while and read and re-read it several times. Thank you for this …

I’m humbled every time someone thanks me for my writing. You are most welcome, Keith! 🙂 And yes, your absence was felt on my blog because you used to give me regular feedback on my work. Meanwhile, another Keith started following my work and encouraging me. So yes, a Keith should always be there! 😇
